Divisibility Rule of 16

A number is divisible by 16 if its last four digits form a number that is divisible by 16.

If the last four digits can be divided by 16 without a remainder, then the whole number is divisible by 16!


Steps to Check Divisibility by 16

  1. Look at the last four digits of the number.

  2. Check if that number is divisible by 16.

  3. If it is, then the whole number is divisible by 16.


Examples

Example 1: Is 12,816 divisible by 16?

  1. Last four digits: 2816

  2. Check divisibility: 2816 ÷ 16 = 176 (No remainder)

12,816 is divisible by 16.


Example 2: Is 7,352 divisible by 16?

  1. Last four digits: 7352

  2. Check divisibility: 7352 ÷ 16 = 459.5 (Not a whole number)

7352 is not divisible by 16.
