Divisibility Rule of 8

A number is divisible by 8 if the last three digits of the number form a number that is divisible by 8.

If the last three digits can be divided by 8 without a remainder, then the whole number is divisible by 8.


Steps to Check Divisibility by 8

  1. Look at the last three digits of the number.

  2. Check if that three-digit number is divisible by 8.

  3. If it is, then the whole number is divisible by 8.


Examples

Example 1: Is 7,192 divisible by 8?

  1. Last three digits: 192

  2. Check divisibility: 192 ÷ 8 = 24 (No remainder)

7192 is divisible by 8.


Example 2: Is 3,245 divisible by 8?

  1. Last three digits: 245

  2. Check divisibility: 245 ÷ 8 = 30.625 (Not a whole number)

3245 is not divisible by 8.
