Area and Perimeter using Square Grid

Area and perimeter are both parts of geometry. Here students will learn about the difference between area and perimeter. In this learning concept, the students will also learn to

  • Classify the area and perimeter of the rectangle formula.
  • Define the area and perimeter of the square formula.
  • Identify how to find the area of a square.

Each concept is explained to class 4 maths students using illustrations, examples, and mind maps. Students can assess their learning by solving the two printable worksheets given at the page’s end.

The Area and Perimeter are the two important concepts of the shapes in geometry.

Let us understand the concept of area.

What Is Area?

When we talk about a square, we know that the square is a four-side bounded figure with all sides as equal.

The area is equal to the space occupied by the flat surface of the particular shape.

To obtain the area of any shape, we take the help of the unit square.

 Area and perimeter

How to Find the Area of a Square?

Step 1: Draw unit squares inside the shape.

Step 2: Count the number of unit squares that need to be cover the whole shape.

Step 3: The area of the figure is equal to the total number of unit squares.

Step 4: The area always has a square unit.

Examples: Let us calculate the area of a rectangle with a length of 4 units and a width of 3 units.

perimeter of rectangle

Step 1: Draw unit squares inside the rectangle.

Step 2: Count the number of unit squares.

There are 12 unit squares. Therefore, the area of the rectangle is equal to 12 square units.

What Is Perimeter?

Perimeter is defined as the sum of the outer boundary of a figure. The picture below shows a frame. The perimeter of the frame is equal to the total boundary length of the frame.

Area and perimeter

In order to find the perimeter of any shape, we add up the boundary lengths of that shape.

Examples: Calculate the perimeter of the triangle.

Area and perimeter

Solution:

Add 6, 6 and 4 to get the perimeter of the triangle.

6 + 6 + 4 = 16

Therefore, the perimeter of the given triangle is 16 cm.

Now, did you understand the definition of the perimeter of any two-dimensional shape.

Area and perimeter

Fun Facts:

  • The word “perimeter” is derived from the Latin word “peri” which means “around” and metron which means “measure”.
  • Two different figures with the same perimeter may have different areas.

Difference Between Area and Perimeter:

Area Perimeter
It is the space occupied by the shape. It is the total distance around the shape.
It is always measured in square unit. It is always measured in linear unit.
For example: If the dimension of the shape is in unit centimetre (cm), then the unit of the area is square centimetre. For example: If the dimension of the shape is in metre (m), then the unit of the perimeter is also metre.
